10 Angels Of Allah And Their Duties

Muslims believe that Malaika or angels were created before humans to obey Allah (ﷻ)’s commands and communicate with humans. Muslims have a firm belief that angels or Malaika, like all other creatures in the universe, were created by Allah (ﷻ). In Islamic beliefs, angels or Malaika convey Allah (ﷻ)’s message to mankind.

Who Are Angels?

The most famous 10 Angels Of Allah And Their Duties are discussed below in detail.

The most famous 10 Angels Of Allah And Their Duties are discussed below in detail.

1. Jibril (Gabriel, Jibreel)

Jibrīl, also spelled Jabrāʾīl or Jibreel, in Islam, is an archangel who acts as a mediator between God and humans and as an ultimate bearer of different revelations in different times, to the prophets of Allah (ﷻ), especially bringing revelations to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).

2. Israfil (Raphael, Israfeel)

“And the trumpet will be blown, and all that is in the heavens and the earth will faint except Allah (ﷻ).  Then it will be blown, then they will stand waiting.” Ref: [Az-Zumar (39:68)]

3. Mikail (Michael, Mikal)

Mikail or Michael is the angel who brings sustenance (provision), food, and everything that is good for us. According to Islam, Michael and Gabriel were the first angels to prostrate to Adam.  Michael himself was attributed to vegetation and rain, which Muslim scholars more generally understood to mean that Michael’s duty was to provide material sustenance to the body and spiritual sustenance to the soul.

Quran

‘’Whosoever is an enemy to God, or his angels, or his apostles, or to Gabriel or to Michael, verily God is an enemy to the unbelievers.” Ref: [Al-Qur’an (2:92)]

4. Izrail ( Azrael, ʿÁzarʾēl, AzrāʾīlʿIzrāʾīl,Ajrā-īl, Ezrā’ël)

Izrael is the angel of death as he removes the soul from the body, not a second more and not a second less when a person dies by the command of Allah (ﷻ). He has neither authority nor will, he does everything by the command of Allah (ﷻ). Regarding such beings and similar concepts, Azrael works best as the death angel of God. He works as a psychopomp, responsible for transporting every soul after death. In Islam and Judaism, he is said to have carried a scroll of human destiny and written and erased his name at birth and death. Surah 32:11 refers to the angel of death who is identified with Azrael. When the unbelievers in hell cry out for help, an angel, also identified with Izrael, will appear on the horizon and tell them that they must stay.

5 & 6. Kiraaman-Kaatibin

Kiraaman-Kaatibin are known to be the honorable recorders of the good and bad deeds of every human. One angel symbolically sits on the right shoulder to record all good deeds and the other sits on the left shoulder to record all bad deeds. Allah (ﷻ) is very kind to His creatures. The moment a Muslim wants to do good, that deed will be recorded in the Book, and when he does good, it will increase. But if one’s intentions are bad, nothing applies unless he actually does something bad. If later he decides not to continue his evil deeds, then this is itself a good deed and will be recorded as such.

7 & 8. Munkar and Nakir

These angels question the dead ones in the grave. When the dead body reaches the grave and people leave the graveyard, then these Angels start the questions from the dead. In doing so, it is not the person who responds, but his actions and beliefs that respond. The question is as follows:

Who is your Lord?

Who is your prophet?

What is your religion?

You cannot learn the answer because the spiritual self answers, not man. A righteous Muslim will be able to answer questions fluently, and the time of resurrection and waiting will be pleasant. On the other hand, not responding will lead to immediate suffering until the Day of Judgment (and beyond). This immediate punishment after death was known and especially evident during the time of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). In a hadith, a large snake was wrapped around the body before it was buried.

9. Ridhwan (Rizwan)

Ridhwan is an angel known to be the guardian of the gates of heaven. If we want to know the angel of paradise in Islam, then this angel will be the answer to who is in charge of maintaining paradise and heaven.

10. Maalik( Chief )

As the angel Ridhwan was named an angel of paradise, the Maalik angel is known to be the angel of Hell. This angel administrates the hellfire and is known to be assisted by 19 mysterious guards known as Zabaniyya. Maalik is mentioned in the Quranic Verses of Sura Az-Zukhruf (43:77) as the chief of Hell/purgatory/Jahannum.
