What Is Dua Qunoot?
A prayer called Dua Qunoot is recited during the Witr prayer. At the conclusion of the third rakat (unit of prayer), before the salam (last salutation), a standing prayer is offered. Although the dua is primarily recited in Arabic, translations are also offered.
The dua is an appeal to Allah for assistance and pardon. Additionally, it conveys the worshipper’s faith in Allah, confidence in Him, and appreciation for His favors. The dua also begs for mercy from Allah and protection from His wrath.
No particular dua needs to be uttered during the third Rakat of Witr. However, a well-known dua is chanted frequently. It is reported that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught his companions this dua.
A recommended (mustahab) component of the Witr prayer is Dua e Qunoot. It is not, however, obligatory (fard). A person’s prayer is still considered valid even if they do not recite the dua.
Although the dua can be recited in any language, Arabic is recommended. Even if someone doesn’t speak Arabic, they can repeat the dua in its translation.
Hadith On Dua Qunoot
The Hadith, narrated by Abu Hurairah, says:
The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to recite Dua e Qunoot in the Witr prayer, asking Allah for guidance and forgiveness. (Sahih Muslim, 756)
